Grrrrrr
Not meaning to complicate the issue with facts and extenuating circumstances — merely, you understand in the interests of intellectual probity and the safe dispersal and dispensing of critical fluids — I need to explain that I have three sons and three daughters — hence three sons-in law — a brother and two sisters — with standard brother-in-law personages — and a clutter of grandchildren, six of them boys who will sooner or later reach drinking-age manhood. If therefore we continue — even be it only with male family members, assuming with no justification at all that among the women there will be minimal interest in Irish whiskey, the fairer and gentler and wiser sex tending somewhat more to elixir of the vine — I have fifteen close family members who are legitimate candidates for the Irish. These are not, in my lexicon, “guests.”
And because of my connection with and affection for these dozen-plus men, I cannot imagine turning one of them away from the liquor cabinet. They are family, who must never be stinted or short-changed. Besides, they all know where the good stuff is.
No, my concern was for proper treatment of the hordes of others — neighbors, old friends, mailmen, political candidates and such-like — who invariably appear at the door as soon as I begin to plan an afternoon or evening of relaxation.
It is in dealing with these that I needed guidance. I believe that Vic has developed and explained a perfectly suitable deflection.

I find that an oaken, hickory or ash stick of significant thickness is best for deflecting the lot you mentioned. Ash being the least preferable as it is not weighty enough to develop “follow through”. Often full application is not needed, the mere presence of said wooden object being sufficient to convey the message.
I’ve carefully cultivated an unlikable personality just to deal with this sort of issue.
Seems to be working so far.
I have, in idle moments, sometimes wondered what was the appropriate group term for those. I should rather have thought ‘clatter’, I suppose. A deflection of Vics, on the other hand, that’s spot on.
I do not recommend “forking mess”. I do not know this from direct experience but via observational experience. There are some things a neighbor will say in a moment of despair that tech the younger generations an exceeding amount.
I can live with that.
