I was always told that when girl said âno you canâtâ âŠ
In seriousness though, the sentiment is a bit flawed. It really only applies to the idealized concept of self identity. Would we agree to this statement if the person contemplating it was a racists? Would we not say âyou canâtâ to that person over and over and try to reform their opinion of their fellow man?
Or maybe that person just needs to spend time with Paulâs parents.
You can tell yourself âyou canâ, but future you does not have to listen.
I tell myself I am going to get up early tomorrow and set right to work, but in the morning my morning self is in charge and morning self doesnât listen for jack.
It is a twisted metaphysical injustice that Iâve only myself to blame. âThatâs where the canker gnaws!â

It does seem to me* that future self is overly awkward and always unwilling to do what I ask of him, while past self seems to have some unreasonable expectations.
