Is it possible to add a column to the synopsis or outliner to give the number of words written in each subdocument? If so, how?
Yes, you can…
In the outliner, select View > Outliner Columns > Word Count.
You’ll see that there are various other similar columns available, such as Total Word Count (which includes the sub-documents of a document).
You can set targets for individual documents by turning on the Targets column (click to edit). Total Targets and Progress are also available.
BTW, if you create a new meta-data field (Project > Meta Data Settings > Custom Meta Data), your new field will also become available for use in the Outliner.
You can find out more details in section 12.2.1 of the manual.

Brilliant. Thank you. I don’t know why I have such trouble finding things in the manual. Maybe it’s that when I enter my keywords and start searching the results I get the very technical entries first, which I don’t understand. Thank you for such a clear explanation.
I have also searched for the answer to a supplementary question without success:
How can I get the word count data to print? when I try to print the outline it refuses to include the word count info.
No problem, glad it helped…
Unfortunately, I don’t think you can print the counts for individual document (i.e. reproduce the Outline view on paper). At least, I couldn’t find a way to do it. Sorry…
Choose File > Page Setup…, select “Scrivener” from the Settings drop-down menu, and click Options. Click the Outlines tab and you’ll see a bunch of checkboxes for the information to include when using Print > Current Document to print (or save to PDF) an outline.
Genius, Jennifer! I am very grateful to you both. Many thanks.
