Additional Split options

When splitting a document, it would be nice to (somehow) have the option to not duplicate the Document Notes in the newly created document.

I see that the Synopsis is not duplicated, which makes more immediate sense, since you’re likely to be splitting in order to create a different scene which would like get a different synopsis. But I sometimes find I’ve inadvertently ended up with multiple documents with identical document notes, that then need to be deleted, or (more problematically) multiple document notes that can differ only slightly from each other, each cloned from the same split, but then edited in ways that require reconciling their differences.

I’m not experiencing this. The duplicated document contains the synopsis as well using 1.8.5.0. Which version are you using?

I’d been using 1.8.0.0 for Windows when I posted. After your reply, I checked and saw that 1.8.5.0 was released about a week ago[/url] (I wish there was an automated way of finding out about those.) So I just installed it and checked, and I’m getting the same behavior on both of the Split commands: The synopsis isn’t duplicated with the new doc, but the doc notes are.

I think this change makes sense and have implemented it in a future version of the Mac version. I’ve also made a note for the Windows team.
All the best,
Keith

Thanks, KB. So then the split copying the synopsis but not the document notes is by design? I’d have thought it would be either copy both or copy neither.

In the General tab of Tools > Options you can enable the automatic check for updates. It will run when you launch Scrivener.

It currently copies the notes but not the synopsis, so the other way around (on the Mac, at least). In answer to your query over the logic of this, yes, it’s by design, because I figured that the notes are likely to apply to the whole document, so splitting a document does not necessarily mean the notes belong with the first document. The synopsis represents the document on the corkboard and outliner, though, so it’s less desirable for that to be copied. Your point about the problems with having multiple copies of the notes is valid, though, which is why I have decided to change this behaviour in a future version.

Got it. Thanks for the explanation!

Is there any chance for an option to choose which metadata goes with splits?
