In RC7, Edit > Addlink still uses the old prefix http://. Pressure has been on all websites to upgrade to the more secure protocol https:// since several years now and it is comparatively rare to find any still on .
Of course, it will still work but a genuine http:// site will cause most browsers to display warnings these days. I believe Scrivener should update this prefix to https:// when adding web links.
The workaround in RC7, naturally, is to tick the ‘No prefix’ button in the Addlink dialogue box.
While this is true - that the default Web link prefix is http:// - if you test it out using a Web address such as google.com or msn.com, they will automatically redirect in the browser to the https:// version of the site. The same is not true for sites that don’t have SSL set up to redirect or don’t have SSL set up at all. If you try to type in those sites (I don’t have an example for you right now) using https:// as the prefix, you will more than likely get a “404 error” page not found (maybe you will get an https:// that defaults back to http://). That said, for typing in a simple URL it is probably better to leave it as http:// for the prefix. For a more complex URL (say the URL for this thread), if you copy the URL in the browser’s address bar, then go to Scrivener and select the Add Link, you will find the address and prefix already added into the link address. Try it out and see. Only issue I have with the add link is that the file:// prefix still uses just two // and should be three /// as per the URL standard (should be file:///).
