Been working through formatting and compiling and I’m trying to understand how I can auto-number images (or tables, or figures) within a chapter.
What I’d like to do:
chapters are folders which are at root level, inside the Draft.
let’s say Chapter 3 has 5 images – I’d like these images to be autonumbered as 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, etc
But then in Chapter 4, which has 5 images – these should be autonumbered as 4.1, 4.2, etc
I’m able to auto-number with the placeholder <$n>, but using <$hn> forces the numbering to be associated with the document level within the chapter – and this isn’t consistent across the chapter itself. (so I get 4.1, 4.1.1.2, 4.1.2, etc). It feels like I’m trying to do two things here: allocate a figure number based on chapter level, followed by the figure’s placeholder sequence within the chapter.
The placeholder help file isn’t getting me where I want to go – and now I’m unclear if I can actually do this.
Has anyone else managed it? Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.
Yes, this is possible to achieve with Scrivener’s placeholder system. I wrote an in-depth tutorial on this, and a few closely related topics, a while back.
Given the description of your layout (chapters on level 1), the examples should work out of the box for your work. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Hi AmberV, I tried to follow the instructions that you gave, as I’m having a similar issue. However, this doesn’t seem to be working at all and I don’t seem to have most of the options that you gave in the other post. Is this because I’m on Windows and not Mac?
I’m in the trial period of Scrivener and trying to decide whether to use it for my thesis or not. Being able to number figures and tables consecutively is important to this decision, so I would really love any hints you could give me on a Windows machine. Thanks!
Yes, this is a Mac discussion thread, it is not meant to be applicable to the old version of Windows. However, I think most of what I have said here is implemented in the beta version.
That said, I use Scrivener+MMD+LaTeX for the kind of stuff that needs quality document output, including things like automatic numbering post-compile. Scrivener all by itself is pretty basic, and not really intended to be used for final formatting.
