I’m a journalist (almost 60 years and still at it). I mostly use MS Word at home. We have a dedicated word processor at work (which is ugly but does the job). I’m very new to Scrivener. Just trying to learn it. I use Word because I got used to it when I was with the Los Angeles Times. Old habits are hard to break. In journalism, I’ve been a reporter (political, science, military affairs, investigative, sports and plain old cops), a photographer, a columnist, a line editor, a copy editor, an assignment editor, a metropolitan/city editor and a managing editor for from tiny weeklies to large dailies. So I guess you could say: “Been there, done that.”
I’m a tech journalist and professional and amateur blogger. I don’t use Scrivener for my journalism – I use a text editor for that. Been using TextMate for a while now, and I’ve used others at other times.
However, I’m also writing a novel, and for that I like Scrivener a lot. I’m getting done with the rough draft, and up until now I haven’t really used any of the features of Scrivener, but I expect to give it a workout as I get into revisions.
Since MW has revived this thread, I should update my earlier response. I’m pretty much using only Scrivener and Bean now, but I started using Pages (which came bundled with my macbook) with an editor who liked to use Word’s comments and change-tracking features, and so when I work with him or otherwise need change tracking (in some freelance copyediting, for example), Pages works a treat.
Hey there,
I wrote about 80,000 words on Scrivner out of 380,000 words last year.
I wrote for every publication in this region. That includes the Springfield Business Journal, the News-Leader, 417 Magazine, Ozark Spaces, Parent and Family, Ozark Signature and a bunch of other stuff I’m forgetting. At one point, I had columns in three of them plus freelance assignments. That was crazy.
I’m working on a software product right now and all my projects are semi-secret because of that.
I’m looking forward to using Scrivner on a mystery novel that has been rattling around in my head.
