Any plans to support .pages?

No biggie, just thought I’d ask. Ever since I dumped MS Word I work a lot in Pages which I MUCH prefer.

Any support for the file format planned?

A quick search on “iwork” and “pages”:

In the above posts I think I have explained the problems with supporting the format. Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the links. Searched before but never found them.

Jeez, I didn’t realize there were so many hurdles from Apple. I followed the link and sent in a letter to the pages team. For what it’s worth.

Thanks for sending them the feedback - it all helps, as I believe they do take into account user feedback if there is enough of it. I was hoping that all the feedback sent to them prior to Pages '09 would encourage them at least to improve their RTF support, so that third-party programs could support them better through RTF if not directly through .pages… But no such luck. For Scrivener 2.0 I have found a way to allow .pages files to be imported, though not exported - but it’s a horrible hack, and relies on you unchecking “save preview in file” in the Save As dialogue, as really it imports the HTML generated by the QuickLook preview rather than the .pages file itself. So yes, it would definitely be nicer if Apple would make it possible for other developers to support their custom file format… I still have my fingers crossed for Snow Leopard.

All the best,
Keith

BTW, some time ago I somehow came across the information, that a Pages file is, in fact, nothing but a ZIP-file.

I tried this. I changed the extension of a pages file from .pages to .zip, tried to unzip - and voilà, I had a folder with some files in it that looked like packages use to look like. I could not figure out what was what, but maybe someone with more experience with the OS and development skills can.

The files inside are mostly XML files - rather hideous XML in my humble opinion, too. Some of the specs for the Pages 1.0 XML were put up on the Apple website, but later versions have not and they make it clear on the same page that the specs are unlikely to become public. So it’s unlikely any third parties will put together an importer/exporter (especially as Apple could change the specs with any new release).

All the best,
Keith
