Arrow keys crashes Scrivener

[macOS 15.5 Scrivener 3.4]

After booting up I can type and delete text with no issues until I try and navigate with any of the arrow keys, then I get the spinning-wheel and the application turns to “not responding” and I have to Force Quit. This will also happen if I try to type in the “Help” bar. Potentially other actions will trigger it, but I haven’t found them.

I’ve tried:

  1. Opening a new blank project (in and outside of iCloud)
  2. Trying a previous project
  3. Reseting preferences
  4. Uninstall and Reinstalling
  5. Installing a legacy version
  6. Resetting keyboard settings and preferences
  7. Rebooting my laptop (many many times)
  8. (noticing then) Updating my Mac to the latest version (then retrying previous steps)
  9. Booting in Safe Mode (the issue was still present)

I’m at a loss. The issue still presenting in Safe Mode makes me think this is an application and not a system error. But I’m not sure.

I am a Windows user, so feel free to completely disregard this post.

Should you be a Windows user too, I’d be confident that it is worth having a side look at your anti-virus.

Now, if you open a project (a blank test one), you say you can type, if you don’t do any of the things that you’ve identified as cause for Scrivener to hang or crash, after typing a word (or even just a single letter, for all that it matters), can you save that project?

spoiler: IT’S FIXED???

Alright. I tried to save a new project via keyboard shortcut (⌘+S)—the system crashed the same.

Then I saved via the Menu Bar: File>Save as—no crash.
Then again: File>Save—no crash.

Now the ⌘+S shortcut AND arrow keys are miraculously working. My main project file is behaving normally again as well.

I have no idea why or what on earth was going on. Not sure I care I’ve already spent the past 4 hours trying to fix this.

Regardless, it’s fixed!!! Thank you!!!

I am very happy for you.
But I have nothing to do with it.

I’m glad it’s sorted itself out for you, but, just as a heads-up in case it re-occurs:

  • one thing it seems you didn’t try is holding down the option key and choosing File > Save and Clear Interface Settings.
  • the other thing that comes to mind is trying a different keyboard if you have one.
