Better Compare Tool

Hello,

I used Scrivener a lot and writing many stories on my blog or for my self.
Scrivener has a compare tool for snapshots but I think that is not enough.
I am working on an iMac and loves the large screen. It would be great to have a better comparing tool
between written documents.

Let me explain what I mean. I am a german and write in german my documents so it is better to explain what I mean of better compare tool.
For now it is difficult to compare documents, especially when you change something on the fly. I mean I working on iPhone and write things down and change something even when I was not on my Mac and sync it with simplenote back to scrivener.
Compares it and snapshot it compare is, you know what I mean.

But let me explain. How I thing a better compare tool would be useful for the next Scrivener version.

For now you have a standard compare tool between snapshot and document. It is nice, but when you creating stuff you change a lot and I think that compare tool should be more efficient.

Check the image I taken on my iMac.

This is what we have now.

A future version of Scrivener should have a extended version of the comparing tool. The tool should not only compare snapshots it should compare documents you written and that are in the binder.
Check it out what I mean here are the idea and the screenshot of it.

Hope you understand what I am trying to say. I am a German and sorry for my not so fluent english.
When you have questions just asks me. I love Scrivener and looking forward to Scrivener for iOS.

P.S. The screens are to large to put it as attach here so i uploaded them to imageshack.
Sorry for my english.

Hi,

I don’t think this would make much sense, really - it’s one thing to compare a newer version of a document against an older version, but another entirely to compare disparate documents which may have nothing in common.

Why don’t you just make your newer versions snapshots? I’m not sure why you would want lots of different versions of the file in the binder rather than having them as snapshots. If you prefer to work that way for some reason, that’s fine, but that’s not how Scrivener does things.

Also, did you know that you can already view snapshots in the split screen? Just drag a snapshot to the header bar of the other editor, and the snapshot will open there (or hold down the Option key as you drag to make it show the comparisons in the other editor).

All the best,
Keith

Hej Keith,

Its not about the snapshots and the newer versions or not.

I mean its about the look of the comparison with the snapshots. The place where snapshots are placed is too little to look and get the whole document to look on.

When you have 2 split screens and one screen is the older version than you can compare it with the newer version, why not.To now you can’t and why not?

I mean the compare tool just show you what was changed and where and I like the colors of it. It shows you and underlines it and so on.
Thats what I love it, comparing and changing. Sometimes I change a lot and I make a lot of snapshots.

When you write things in your bed on the iPhone or iPad when you got an inspiration and you have to synch it back and reworked the whole document because every time I sync documents I have to rewrite some ideas that comes to my mind, when I was not on the mac.
I would like that Scrivener shows me what I have changed and where and not only in the snapshot section.
Why not in the document? Why only there in the snapshot section.

The whole thing snapshot compare and document is okay for now but the space of the snapshot where everything is marked what you have changed is too little. I mean its okay when you work on an Macbook Air 11" but when you work on an iMac then the space is too little for that. Why does not change it.

When you does not want to improve the comparison tool than write a code where you can split the screen between the snapshot you have done and the document you are working on.
And it shows the snapshot where everything is marked and the actually document.
That would be fine.

But for now the space is too little to look deeper on the whole document. It is okay right now, but it could be better. Thats why I thing this needs a change.

Hi Jake,

But that’s what I’m saying, you can view the snapshots in the other split:

This is all covered in our video on snapshots on our videos page:

All the best,

Thanks Keith,

Thats it

Okay now then forget about my compare tool, that fits it very well how it is now.

You can close my thread.

Glad that helped!
