feck all sacred in this day and age!

I think it’s a slight stretch calling it a hit show. I never heard of it before. However, to address the Portland phenomenon, I believe it’s simple geography. Portland sits between the California hippy and the Seattle grunger. Eventually they found each other on the commute along I-5. It sounds like a neat place, but who would want to live somewhere where it’s cold and rainy year round? Oh, sorry… :blush:

The bilges in question belong to the leaky old pirate tub, Scrivener.

An awful lot of Scriv crew members…Bilge Rattus rattus :frowning:

Did any else notice what seems to be a shift in meaning behind “feminist”?

How so? I read the article and noticed something.

Although on second thought, I do see where that would go off topic since topic is “port-rattus bilge-icus”.

From a cultural studies perspective, the article seemed to be more closely referencing lesbian feminism, which is still under the umbrella of Feminism, which is under that great big umbrella of Gender Studies.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesbian_feminism

Or maybe I’m way off base. What were you referring to exactly?

You pretty much hit it on the head.

Just seemed like a huge swing (addition). Maybe I am just too 70’s/80’s focused when it was more about fair treatment. Or maybe it is too southern/midwestern view.

Either way it seemed odd.

Though my DVD collection may disagree, I’m no expert on lesbianism, let alone lesbian feminism. Here’s how I understand it. Lesbian feminism criticized the feminist movement for not going far enough. It claimed that feminism:

  1. still depended on masculinity and patriarchal principles.
  2. tended to marginalized any minority voice and promote homophobia.

Lesbian feminism argued that feminism only portrayed white, middle to upper class, and heterosexual as the only model for a true experience as a woman. When they refer to feminism in this article, what I’m seeing them refer to is the celebration of femininity independent of masculinity, rather than the political dialogue of seeking equal rights. Lesbian feminism probably has a closer alliance with queer theory than with the principles of feminism as you know it.

Actually that part is in between Seattle and California, too. We get about three months of Seattle (which is a bit of a stretch, it doesn’t rain as much here, but is grey and cool) and three months of California (bay area), and the rest is a highly variable mix.

But it does help if you don’t mind, and in fact enjoy, rainy days. :slight_smile:

Thank you. That is all.

PS: The topic is now about Portland Feminist Brownie Recipes

Do they look something like this? (Warning: Risque picture. That’s the reason why I only linked it. No actual nudity though. Click at your own risk.)

“Figgidus diggidy doo!”

DIGITUS IMPUDICUS!!!

one two three…

… and all of this because of some inane TV program centered on Portland. Have none of you seen GRIMM? According to the write-up at IMDb: “In modern day Portland, Oregon, a police detective inherits the ability to see supernatural creatures.” (I thought everyone in Portland had that ability.) For a fuller taste of the saga, check the network site:
<http://www.nbc.com/grimm/>

If you want the true underlying social-fabric-ripping truth, there’s an article in the Telegraph which exposes it.
<http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/9078489/Fairytales-too-scary-for-modern-children-say-parents.html>
Title of the URL says it all. They don’t call it grimm for nothing.

ps

When I hear Portland and Seattle I think of the Shadowrun Series of books (and RPGs)
