Yes I used search. No I did not find my answer. Yes I am an idiot.
I have, for the first time in my life, used scrivener to make a full outline PRIOR to writing the actual work. Don’t ask, just read the last part of the preface. So I find myself with the editor pane split vertical, outline on the left and the entire doc in a scrivenings view on the right. This is peaches and cream for about 3 sections until I can’t remember where the heck I am in the outline. Sure, the inspector shows me the synopsis and such, but working from an actual outline I want to know exactly where I am in the argument (I keep jumping ahead then back tracking, not surprising is it?).
All that to say, is there a way to get either the left editor pane OR the binder to automatically follow my text cursor position?
Ioa will probably answer before I even submit this post.
And for the record, I tried to go OT, but it just hurt too much.
The short answer, though, is no - by design the interface is left-to-right - but you can easily jump to the location in the binder by hitting opt-cmd-R (View > Reveal in Binder).
Oh, and if you don’t find it as a tip in that thread: View/Editor/Show Titles in Scrivenings. That way you don’t have to keep the Inspector open if the header bar title is too long to give you any useful info. You can also get localised outline and position information from the header bar icon menu. The Go To menu converts to a Scrivenings navigator when applicable, with the currently edited item checked off. Opt-Cmd-R is usually easier than that though.
Actually, you are about to call me a stupid idiot, but I do things a bit differently now that I am writing for real.
First, I actually make this thing called an outline. Binder open, project folder (paper for the week) selected, editor in cork board. I create note cards and populate synopsis in pass one to represent the major points. I then split vertical setting left side to the project folder in outline view. The left side gets locked. I close the binder, open the inspector, then open a right click on a point and select “open in right editor”. Right view gets set to cork board then I start fleshing out points using the notes section of the inspector to ensure major idea are set. Repeat for all major points. This completes my outline. As if that was not bad enough, I then do a select all in the left editor (the outline) and open in the right editor as a scriven-ing view. Big long list of space, divider, space, divider, space, divider, space. Then I type until I pass out or the wife brings me a cookie.
So the problem here is that as I type in a section and move on I quickly lose the position in the over all outline as the top item is selected but I am 19 points in. Remember the binder is closed so reveal in binder is … not all that helpful. But I do have the inspector open so really the answer is “pay attention you moron!”
