Bold font ruining line spacing

I’m using Crimson Text font and when I bold it, it causes line spacing to increase noticeably (see screenshot). What’s worse, it leaves the spacing uneven between lines depending on whether one line or two lines has bold in it.

In line spacing settings I’ve tried various combinations of line height and inter-line spacing but can’t seem to get it fixed.

Any ideas?

This is a known problem of the Crimson font version that’s available on Google fonts. I tried the version that’s on Fontsquirrel.com, but it seems stuck in double-spaced mode.

You may need to choose a different free font. I’m fond of Alegreya, also free, available from Fontsquirrel.
