Hi,
I use scrivener on two different computers at work and at home. Although the automatic backup settings on my two computers are the same, My computer at work does backup on project close automatically and successfully. But my computer at home does not backup the project. both of computers have the same operating system (Win10) and both of back up folder is in onedrive. What could be the problem.
- Make sure OneDrive is actually working on both computers.
- Verify that the OneDrive folder is actually where you think it is. If some error happened, OneDrive will under certain conditions create a new base folder. Your location could then switch without you realizing it.
- You should set it to keep unlimited copies of backups and then go in manually from time to time and remove the ones you don’t need.
Thank you friend,
I am sure that this is not a sync or a cloud storage problem. In my work computer, when I close the program, program has a message to me on the screen “backup” and I see loading of it. But in my home computer, I don’t see the back up message, as my work computer. program just closed like there is no setting for “auto back up when program is closed”. In my opinion this is a bug.
Hi aoztekin,
When using your home computer, are you able to manually backup to your selected drive? That is, does the issue appear to be with automatic backups or with all backups in general?
Hi thePhilosoraptor,
I able to manually backup my project on my home computer. I think the problem is about automatic backups. And one last issue about backup: when the program is back up the project, it shows a message for information to the user about backup usually. But sometimes it does not shows the message. I mean backup message is not working regularly. Thanks for your interest.
Backups happen only when you’ve modified something in the project. Also, the progress window only appears if the backup takes longer than a couple of seconds to perform. Finally, editing backup copies of a project, where they’re located in the backups folder, will not trigger a new backup to be created.
So please verify that if you modify the “live” project (adding a space to a document and then deleting it should suffice), monitor the backups folder, and see if a new file (folder, actually) appears as you close that project in Scrivener.
For added security against accidentally opening and editing a backup, I recommend that on both computers, you turn on the “compress automatic backups as zip files” option.
Hi rdale,
I just tried your suggestions one by one. I opened a project file that I was working on before, Italicized the whole article and closed the program. There was no change in my backup folder. Since I was working on OneDrive, when I closed the project, I monitor that the synchronization is only in the project folder. There was no sync in the backup folder. There was no backup in both the local folder on my computer and the folder in the cloud. I tried this process by opening a new project. I copied texts and added PDF files to a project which I just created, saved, and closed. A saved folder has occurred for the new project, but no backup folder has been created. If it will provide a better understanding of the problem, I can share screens (screen mirroring) to an official.
Just one last thing, to be absolutely sure this isn’t to do with where you’re editing the project.
What’s the path of your backups folder on your home computer (as seen in File->Options->Backups)? (feel free to obfuscate your user id if you wish).
What’s the path to the copy of the file you’re editing on your home computer?
To get the path for your project, navigate to where it’s located in the Windows file browser. Then right-click in the area that contains “This PC > Windows (C:) >”,… etc.(or similar), and select “Copy address as text”. Hopefully the developers will be able to see from this if there is an actual bug, or if it’s expected behavior.
Try changing the backup path to a different valid location outside of OneDrive and test it again.
Hi thePhilosoraptor,
yesterday, I said that I was able to back up manually. However, I realized that I could not express exactly what I wanted to say. I can only backup with the “back up to…” button. Unfortunately, I cannot backup with the “Back up now” button.
And finally, the problem still persists after the beta update released today.

Try changing the backup path to a different valid location outside of OneDrive and test it again.
Hi tiho_d,
I tried what you said. I changed the backup address to desktop. Unfortunately, I was unable to back up both automatically and manually.

Hi,
These ara the locations both “Back up” folder and the “save” folder.
"C:\Users\L-G580\OneDrive - ******.edu.tr\SCRIVENER
Thanks for suggestions.

The fact that you cannot backup on your Desktop reveals that for some reason you have credentials mismatch. Reinstalling Scrivener under the same user account or under Administrator account might help.

Hi,
The save and backup locations that I shared for my home computer are the same as those on my business computer but automatic backup (back up on project close) on my work computer works fine.
Different computers have totally different security credentials, especially work vs home computers.
