I accidentally hit "ignore spelling’ instead of the spelling correction and now it will let me type that incorrect word without flagging it. Is there a way to access the ignored words dictionary or something and fix this?
Thanks so much!
Yes, it can be done, but it is a little bit techie. Spelling is part of OS X, independent of Scrivener, so this will work for other applications as well (sadly, not Word).
- In Finder, click on “Go” in the menu.
- Hold down the Option key, and you will see a folder called “Library” appear in the list. Select this folder.
- In Library, open the folder called “Spelling”
- In Spelling, you will see a file called something like “en” (since I use Australian English, on my system it is “en_AU” - adjust your expectations according to the language you are using).
- Before you do anything to this file, play it safe and make duplicate version of it (select it, then go to File -> Duplicate or just press Cmd-D). If something goes wrong, you can use this copy to restore things how they were.
- Double click on this file and it will open in TextEdit. Each line will contain one word that you have added to your spelling dictionary.
- To remove your rogue word, simply delete the entire line it is on.
- Save the file.
- Close the file.
- Quit TextEdit.
- Close the Finder window showing the Spelling folder.
- Log out from OS X.
When you log back in, the system will no longer recognise the word you deleted from the dictionary.
nom – I’m not sure that works for a word that has been “ignored” rather than for one that has been “learned” by mistake. For “learned” words you can use Dictionary Editor (freeware)

I use Spell Catcher, so I’m not too sure about how to “un-ignore” in the standard OS spell checker.
Cheers, Martin.
