Why is it that when I edit a portion of a document in a different font (Bandschrift Semilight) the font will be replaced the next time I open the document?
That’s hard to explain. What the heck? What am I missing? I simply want those font choices to stick and not get switched.
Hello Tom. Are you syncing your Scrivener project to another computer or a mobile device? That might be the source of this issue since font formatting might be lost if the other device doesn’t have that font installed.
But if you’re only accessing this project via one computer, then you might test using that font with Scrivener’s Interactive Tutorial to see if it also loses that font when the project is closed and reopened.
If the Tutorial retains the font, you could create a new, blank project and test the font in it. If the test project retains that font, you could open the test project and your working project side by side on your PC. Then, you can drag-and-drop the materials from the flawed project into the Binder of the new project. If closing and opening the new project retains those fonts, that test can be your new project.
But, if either the Tutorial or the test project won’t retain that font, you might uninstall and reinstall that font.
If that still doesn’t correct the issue, please consider starting a help ticket so that we can dig deeper into this with you.
I emailed you back a sample done in Interactive Tutorial mode to see if my fonts changed.
One of the three fonts I used didn’t remain intact after I saved and reopened the project.
That was Bahnschrift Semibold. My default font, Times New Roman, never has this issue. On this test project, the top section in Bahnschrift Light, also stayed as it was.
If you don’t get that email (sent by reply to your email), let me know.
Hello Tom. The project you attempted to send did not reach me, likely due to the forum’s settings.
Since the font wasn’t retained when you tested it via the Tutorial, I suggest you try installing that font and reinstalling it just to be sure the font files your PC uses aren’t the issue.
If that doesn’t resolve it, then please open a help ticket via that link I shared earlier.
First, the font is Bahnschrift, not ‘Bandschrift’. As in trains (in Germany, where the original font came from, just a historic note).
Then, this is a very peculiar font - Microsoft messing around with a form of fonts they’re not familiar with. It’s not actually multiple fonts; rather one which gets its hinting changed to appear as many.
I experimented a few minutes with a very simple project. I found that:
If you select Bahnschrift as the main font name, you get offered “Demi Bold” among others as a face choice -
but that what Scrivener actually does is apply some kind of faux bold, italic, etc. to the base font, depending on your selection, not using the actual Bahnschrift faces.
If, however, you choose Bahnschrift Semibold (!) in the base font choice, now you will get SemiBold(!) automatically selected also for the face – and you’ll get the actual semi/demi bold Bahnschrift face on your text.
However, after saving, closing, reopening the project in Scrivener, that Bahnschrift SemiBold that was correct isn’t correct any longer. It’s reverted to the faux version, and in fact now says the face is just "Bold’"for the face.
So that’s what you’re probably running into. It looks like Scrivener doesn’t get along with this odd font creation by Microsoft.
I tried it in Word 2013 which I keep around, and it’s treated pretty similarly there - though the form you chose is actually remembered across re-opens.
The font this is based on, DIN 1451, doesn’t appear to have any bold or semibold forms itself, so I think you’re stuck with what you’re getting, if you really want this look. Or possibly via one of the more conventional free alternatives listed here?
