Can't change target wordcount[BUG LOGGED]

I’m working on my Nanowrimo project and, of course have fallen behind.

So I have tried to up my session target from 1667 words to 2500 words. It will show me the % done temporarily, but the second I minimize or shut down the Project Target window, it resets back to 1667 words.

I am running Windows XP. Beta version 1.3

Try pressing Return after typing in the new number and see if that helps. I think that field should automatically store, so there might be a problem there, but return should commit it.

Nope. Didn’t work. :frowning:

Hmm. I still cannot reproduce this problem. It sticks for me no matter what I do or how I close this window (or not close it, in the case of minimisation). Have you tried closing and re-opening the project; and second, have you tried reproducing the error in a new blank project? I’m wondering if it has something to do with the way the NaNo template was saved.

I can’t reproduce this on my XP running computer either.

Hi,

I’m new, so I’m only starting now with such features.
I tried it out on every project I have created and confirm that, on closing the window, the targets have disappeared (Win7 - NON NaNo).
On minimising the window, the targets are neatly kept.

Pressing return causes the number in the box to be selected.

I also noticed that there is no OK button on that dialog. That’s rather unusual…

As for your last question, that’s because it is a live palette, not a dialogue box. You can leave it open beside your project window while you write, and watch the progress bars go up. Think of like a palette in Photoshop where you set brush attributes. You don’t click Okay on that.

I have a suggestion, hopefully – for the moment, if it’s convenient… Could we have an ‘Apply’ button to reassure ourselves that the number change has been accepted? Sometimes I get in a hurry and forget to minimize or restart or press ‘Enter’ or whatever it takes to make the change permanent. (Think of it as a crutch for us inept types  )

By the way, thanks for a jewel of a word/text/novel/dream processor. You guys do great work!

That was actually a bit misleading, above. You shouldn’t have to press enter at all. The number should take impact as soon as you stop typing it in. I was just suggesting that to see if perhaps there was a problem with an OS version or something that might have been hampering that ability.

Oops, sorry.

I needed to mention that my platform is a Toshiba laptop/Windows 7 and I’m getting the problem aforementioned --inconsistent retention of session target changes, regardless of key-presses.

If you are running Beta 1.3 this will work. To tell if you have beta 1.3, goto the Scrivener menu - Help>About Scrivener. This will display a message box with the beta version. If you can’t see the menu in your version of Scrivener, you are running an older version and the target words, as you correctly state, will not store their values.

I don’t know if this behavior is meant to be this way but when I minimize the pallet and then maximize it, the target word count is reset to zero and the display is populated by a green movement going from left to right.

I’m using Beta 3 and Windows Vista 32 bit.

This continues to be a problem for me under Beta 1.3 on Windows 7. My progress bar is normally set at 1667 words; however, once, I set it to 739. Now, if I set it to 1667 and then minimize the Scrivener window, when I maximize, the progress bar has reverted to 739. The 739 number seems to stick across sessions as well. The progress bar shows correctly when I enter 1667, but I have to do so every time I open the program or restore the window.

When I set the project targets, I usually set the number and then leave it up and put it on my second screen so I can see it as I’m typing. But when I minimize/maximize, it resets the number to my original.

I think I set my target to 800 words the first time I used it. And now that seems to have turned into the default even though I usually set it to 2000 every time I use it. I’ve got to set it fresh every time I use it now. And if I minimize and maximize, it resets it to the 800.

I think a lot of these issues are the result of running an early beta. Please see the announcement section of this forum and upgrade to beta 1.3 where these issues have been addressed. For example, if you click on the Scrivener Help menu and can’t see an ‘About Scrivener’ entry, then you are not using the latest beta 1.3 and will continue to experience these issues.

I know that there was a stray amazon link that still contained beta1.0 download that was only changed recently. So, that could be one reason we are addressing these issues again?

If we’re actual talking Project Targets as opposed to document targets then there’s a noted bug in 1.3, or maybe I’m not getting this altogether?

No, I’m using 1.3 and I downloaded it from links in this forum.

  1. Type ctrl-T. The Project Targets pop up. The Session Target has the word count set to 800.
  2. Change the Session Target wordcount to 2000 using the arrows to roll it up.
  3. Hit Minimize and it minimizes.
  4. Hit Restore and it restores but the Target Word Count is set back to 800.
  5. Type in the 2000 into the Target Word Count and hit return.
  6. Minimize and then Restore and it’s back to 800.

Yeah I’ve noticed the same thing, however it looks like any changes you make to the word/character count are only applied when you CLOSE the window, not when you merely minimise it.

So it you alter your count again then hit the red x, then CTRL T again you should see the revised count has stayed.

Perhaps we need an APPLY button as well as the RESET one?

What would they be applied to? An apply button implies that the window is sending data to some other place to be used by other parts of the program. In this case, that goes nowhere. The only place session and project goals are used are in this palette.

When this is working properly, you don’t have to do anything special at all. On my system, I just type in a number and the progress bar jumps over to where it should. I can close it, load it later, load it ten days later and it still has the same number. When working properly, it doesn’t need any buttons.

Fair enough, sounds like it’s just a case of waiting for the bugs to be fixed.

(Incidentally after I changed the Word Count Session target the % has been stuck at 0% and doesn’t change no matter what value I enter now).

Would it be possible to have the overall session word count target/status displayed somewhere permanently (ie the top of the screen). Just that the individual document targets seem to work fine but I, and perhaps others, would prefer to know how many words I’d written in total across all documents in the current session. That is, the info you get from the Project Targets window is displayed without having to go in there.

Here’s what I get after minimizing Project Targets and restoring it.

Numbers inserted:

  • Draft Target: 2000
  • Session Target: 500
(Documents included in Draft only: checked.

OS: Windows Vista 32 bit

Cheers.
