can't get rid of this formatting

This isn’t enough information. Please give more details about what you were doing and where.

I don’t know what I did but all my text in this one document is, by default, wrapped in a dotted border and highlighted in light blue. I can still style the text within that (like change the font or the highlight colour) but I can’t make any of it go away. Like, I can change the highlight colour to white and that’ll cover up the blue, but if I cancel it, it becomes backed by blue again. This only happens in this one document and if I copy and paste it anywhere else, it’ll carry over but not affect any of the other text in other documents. I would really like the dotted borders at least to go away because it makes reading my notes hard.

That helps. I wonder if you accidentally created a Comment (for me Comments have a yellow background, not blue, but that is configurable). Open the Inspector (Ctrl+Shift+I, or click the “i” button at top right) and see if it shows anything.

I’m a Mac user, so I’m only guessing, but it sounds like you’ve got “preserve formatting” switched on for those paragraphs. But a Windows user will have to come along and tell you how to turn it off on Windows. I’m not even on my Mac at the moment, so I can’t even check there … it’s not a feature I’ve ever used.

By the way it always helps others if you say which version of Scrivener you’re using together with Windows version and any other technical details. Fuller screen shots help too.

Brilliant. It does look like that may be it. It’s covered in sec. 15.4.5, p. 165, of the Manual, and does seem to look like this when I try it out. I’ve never used it or thought of using it, and it’s a bit of a mystery how it could be applied accidentally, since you have to select the text and then do Format > Formatting > Preserve Formatting to put it in effect; there’s no keyboard shortcut. But the way to get rid of it is to follow that same process: select the text, then Format > Formatting > Preserve Formatting.

This was exactly it! Thank you so much!!

So glad to hear that you got it fixed! Great big kudos to xiamenese for the insight!
