I have my files backed up on dropbox. Today, when I was working on an already open file, scrivener crashed with the error message that it ’ could not find the source of the file’. I downloaded the backup from dropbox which was saved as a .scrivx file. I am now getting the error message that the file has the wrong extension, and only files with .scriv can be opened.
Any advice? It is a for a client for work so really need access to the file!!
The .scrivx file is to your project as a card catalog is (was?) to a library: All writing, notes, snapshots and other content is stored in the various folders and files of the topmost .scriv folder.
So don’t just extract the .scrivx file; it won’t do anything for you on its own. Instead, extract the entire thing (if it was a .zip file, just CMD-click (or is that CTRL? I forget and am not at my Mac) and choose the option that extracts everything.
By the phrase, downloading from Dropbox, I presume you’re using the website instead of having the software installed. With the site, just make sure to download the folder with your project name, where the name of the folder ends in “.scriv”. On a Mac with Scrivener installed, these folders with extensions will be treated as files, but on anything else, your projects will appear in their natural state, which is a folder filled with many files—every single one of which is important.
When you download a folder from Dropbox, it will be zip archived, so you’ll need to extract it, as mentioned above (and it is Ctrl-click, or just right-click).
