This is a very minor thing, but when I have caps lock enabled and click the Help menu, the caps lock icon correctly shows up below the cursor in the Search field, but if I then press the caps lock key (and the caps lock green LED goes off, indicating caps lock is no longer in effect) —so I’m not typing in all caps—the caps lock icon does not disappear. If I click off the Help menu and return, the caps lock icon is (properly) no longer there.

If it is possible in the macOS programming environment to have the caps lock icon go away (while the focus is on the Help menu) when caps lock is turned off, that would be nice.

(I tried to upload a screenshot showing the context, but I’m new to the forum and need to get approved to upload content, but I’ve explained the matter clearly.)

I would give this a try in any other Mac program that features this help search field (which should be everything native, since it’s baked into the Help menu itself rather than supplied by individual programmers). I don’t believe we have a single line of code for this regardless, but it would be interesting to see if it is universal behaviour.

It would also be good to know what version of macOS you use, as the behaviour of this thing has changed (and its reliability has changed) over time. In macOS 15 for example, I’ve always found it to be a roll of the dice whether you’ll see it at all.

Alas, I no longer have a functional 14.x partition to test against, but I’d give it another shot once you do upgrade and see if it changes. In 15, what I see is that I sometimes get the indicator in the main text editing area of TextEdit (or Scrivener), and then nothing at all _ever_ appears in the Help field, regardless of whether caps lock is on before opening it or toggled after opening it.

I’ll file this under macOS-specific and os-related bug reports for now.

macOS 14.8.9 (23J631) [The latest and last v. of macOS 14—I’ll be upgrading my macOS this year]

Scrivener 3.5.2 (17487)

I just tried the same in Fantastical (a 3rd party macOS app), and the behavior is the same. Seems to be Apple macOS behavior, either inherent, or using Apple’s macOS code libraries(?) (used by app devs), as you do. thanks

It’s a macOS bug (I’m on 15.8.2 24H232). Happens in all kinds of apps infrequently. Sometimes the Caps indicator “sticks”, sometimes it’s the input language icon…

\* Using both on the same key, depending on the keypress duration, in case anyone wonders.
