I often find myself looking down at my laptop, phone or tablet, which has given me neck strain, and my physio told me this is such a common problem now that they call it ‘electronic neck’.
Being able to look at the top of the screen while writing would make a big difference to me and my poor neck muscles. It might only be a few inches on the screen, but when you translate those inches through space to the position of your head, those inches are crucial to better posture.
So, please can I have an option to move all of Scrivener’s toolbars to the bottom of the page, or maybe to the side?
Also, to set the cursor and active line of text to be at the top or in the top third of whatever page I’m using, instead of in the middle or at the bottom of the page?
You’ve already got a lot of flexibility for the window layout.
There’s a dotted vertical line on the left side of the “main” toolbar (right-click on a blank space in the toolbar and deselect “lock toolbar” if it’s not there). Drag that to the bottom of your window. Then split your editor horizontally and view your editing session in the top (use the bottom for whatever you like, or just ignore it) and resize to keep your text in the top 1/3 of your screen. Go to Window->Layouts->Layout Manager and save your window layout there, in case you want to switch to it after rearranging things for other work.
A friend of mine has a similar problem. She has bought a stand for her laptop to ensure she is looking at the screen head on, and a Bluetooth keyboard. Very practical solution for long periods spent at a desk, not so practical if working ‘on the road’.
If expense isn’t the bit that makes it impractical, then a very light & thin keyboard plus one of these could be a pretty good step up, ergonomically speaking: therooststand.com/
