I take notes from my reading materail and use Scivener to REVISE Abridged versions of books i have read - so instead of reading the book a second time - I read the Abridged version - which has all my FOOTNOTES and KEYWORDS. My query is
How can i get the compiled version - I use DEFAULT to show chapter numbers? and Sub-chapters?
Can it also show Keywords for each chapter?
Can the footnotes be hyperlinked - like each footnote appears in the correct place but can i click it to read the whole footnote or do I need to scroll all the way to the botttom?
Any help videos on YouTube? Or any suggestions or guides that anyone can suggest?
It would be helpful to know what file format you are compiling to. Different file formats have different capabilities.
You are making abridged versions of extant book text. Does the book text not already feature Chapter numbers? And if not, since this is static text – whose chapter numbers should never be changed – why not just add them manually to the chapter headings?
(You could use Scrivener placeholders and have the numeration generated for you at compile time, but if your abridgement sidelines a whole chapter or whole subsection, then all your subsequent chapter/section numbers will not correspond to the original [bad]. Cf. menu Help > List of Placeholders…).
Use the Metadata box in the Section Layout specification to enable Keywords. Note that you’ll also get any other metadata associated with the document. (Labels, Status, custom metadata, etc.)
Hyperlinked footnotes are the default in formats that support hyperlinks.
You could also duplicate the manuscript and relabel abridged version. Modify text as you want but preserve all metadata. Now add second “book” to a collection and compile that. Chapter numbering should be preserved. You could also take a snapshot before modifying text to have original as a snapshot.
Thanks for the revert - what i do is to use claude.ai to make index cards - these are all the learnings from the book - then i add keywords ot these cards - and then compile. So, the chapter numbers are all there - when I compile i want the abridged notes of the entire book - extracted as above, and I think the key is in the SECTION LAYOUT - so the chapter should be defined as ‘Heading’ and the Sub document type as STRUCTURE BASED and the individual chapters should have a Sub Document type as - HEADING
I have tried various permutations and combinations of the above and i seem to running around in cirlces - so if anyone can help me getting my HEAD around the concept - I can then figure it out and revert. Thanks
You can have a synopsis or notes added to the Section layout for your scenes or chapters as well when you compile. The image below shows a preview of what it could look like. you could easily uncheck the text and only keep the synopis or scene notes in the compile output with a few simple clicks.
wow - how did you do this - obviously you defined a new format in the compile settings - but it’s very nicely done indeed - thanks for sharing - like i said - I use Scrivener for research - so this is useful to learn - thanks
I have a series of compile articles on my website that might help and talk about section layouts and matching with section types. Your need was unique in the desire for notes to be compiled. I suggest a compile collection to practice and test out. (for my novel this includes an Act, 2 chapters to check numbering schemes and several scenes, and front matter) I will compile this and get quick feedback on how things look.
start with this article, but can search site for scrivener compile articles with examples. Will add this one as interesting.
For shits and giggles I compiled this set up and included text, but unchecking the text box would remove the scene text. I also show what this looks like after you have assigned the Section Layouts to your section type. I used a small compile collection for this test. See the images below.
First is the Second panel of the Compile interface showing a mockup of how it will appear.
duplicated a default template and have been playing around with it for the last couple of hours! The functionality is truly awesome, and totally customizable - your website is rich and useful. There is a ‘learning curve’ for sure - and it’s fun to be honest. Thanks
Glad the articles helped. When experiment duplicate the section layout by clicking the plus sign will create a duplicate section layout with a blank title. You could do version section layout 1, 2, 3 etc so could revert to earlier layout if make a mistake.
