I am writing a prequel book, where I would like each chapter to be the name of the character in the series. How can I set this up so it compiles with the character name in the table of contents, and within the manuscript? I tried a few things, but it still lists number 1 in both.
A windows user BUT look at your section layout for the chapter section type.
Duplicate the compile format you use and give it a descriptive name. This way if mess up original compile format untouched.
In the section layout for chapters click on it and remove all placeholders under every tab below. Now check the title box. Save and assign modified section layout to your chapter section type. The preview should show a section title and placeholder text. Try a compile.
I hope this helps.
Almost all, if not all, of the default compile Formats provide a Section Layout that prints the title by itself (with or without a page break). It should not be necessary to go any deeper into the compiler than clicking on the Assign Section Layouts... button and mapping your chapters to this layout. I believe most should call it “Titled Section”, but if not that, something close to it, like the “Section with Title” in the stock “Ebook” compile format.
