Does anyone know what color setting determines the coloring of the bottom control strip in composition mode? I noticed it changes if i switch between the pre-made color themes - but I’m not able to figure out which setting controls the strip for the life of me.

It’s probably in the Theme and not in the Appearance settings.
The color is named “Window” in the palette file. Which is a pity, because the color is also used for many other UI-elements:
Window(0,0,255) //Blue: Window background, Toolbars BG, menubar BG, Editor BG, Pane headers bar, unselected tab, Picklist BG, Keyboard shortcut BG, and now also Composition Mode Toolbar BG.
So if you want to change the background-color of the toolbar in Composition Mode this way, you will also update all these other colors. Some of these elements, you can override with another color in the palette or stylesheet, like the Editor Background, the Menus and most of the title and footer bars. But still many window backgrounds will also pick up the “Window” color values.
