Compilation question in Scrivener 3

I am having a small compilation issue that I’m sure can be fixed simply, but I can’t figure out how to do it. My five parts and twelve chapters all have titles, but they are not printing in compile mode – just "Part 1, Chapter 1, etc. Can someone point er to the solution?

[Assuming you have Version 3 of Scrivener]

Without any more details, it sounds like there is a mismatch between the Section Types you have given the elements in the Binder, and the Section Layouts you have allocated those Section Types in the Compilation format.

The default Section Layouts for most compilation formats includes ones set up for just the Title, just the Number or both. The most likely solution to your problem is that you’ve chosen the wrong Section Layout by accident.

So the first thing to check is that:

a) You have allocated a distinct Section Type to Parts and Chapters in the Binder (easiest way to check is to Compile and in the first dialogue box, look at the outline of the project in the right hand pane – are all the Section Types as you’d expect them to be?)

b) You have allocated the correct Section Layout to each of those Section Types. Click on Assign Section Layouts and in the list on the left, click on the Section Type for Part, then scroll through until you’ve found a Section Layout which shows both the Number and Title of the Part. Then do the same for the Chapter.

The Section Layout you want will say both Part (or Chapter) 1 and Section Title, not just Part 1.

There may be other causes, but this is the first thing to check. Once it’s working, if you don’t like the way the Number and Title are laid out (side by side, centred etc), then you need to edit the compilation format (duplicating it first if necessary) and edit the Section Layout to suit your needs.
