I cannot for the life of me figure out how to compile just the outline and synopsis. It was easy in 2.0, but the 3.0 is a baffling beyond belief. Help!
In the compiler there are only two steps:
- Select the outline style in the format list: one of “Enumerated Outline”, “Full Indented Outline” or “Outline Document”.
- Click “Assign Section Layouts”, and probably just select everything in the right sidebar and choose which numbering style you want by clicking on the preview tile.
I’ve done this and all I get is the entire manuscript. No outline, just the entire book. All I want is the synopsis.
Finally, What i found is that you have to go through every Section type and select “Section Title”. Or else you get everything. It was so much easier in the old version.
In version 2:
Compile > All Options > Formatting > tick the synopsis boxes, untick everything else (1-2 clicks per layer) > Compile
In version 3:
Compile > Full Indented Outline > Assign Section Layout (3-4 clicks?) > Compile.
You only have to assign the section layouts once. Once you’ve done that, it works for that project from then on. And you can use the same Compile Format with any project. In Scrivener 2, each Format only worked for a limited number of projects.
Or you can do what I suggested in the response and select every type in the left sidebar (Cmd-A works) and then choose how they will all look with a single click.
When I do this, I get the outline, but NO synopses! And I don’t even see a “heading and synopsis” option when I click on Sections.
Not every one of the Formats I listed as potential options in this checklist include synopses variants. If one doesn’t have the look you’re aiming for, try one of the others.
And of course you can edit these formats and make them work with synopses by hand—but the intent of this specific thread was to do this very easily: and for that the built-in options are diverse and should encompass most preferences.
It does not work for me
I chose the enumerated and indented outline while trying out, and choose the layout, and while I get all my section headings now I have no option to get the synopses.
How does it work?
I am using the Software for my dissertation and would need to reach in my outline with current synopses…
Bear in mind this is a Mac thread you are posting to, and from your profile tag it looks like you use the Windows version. Unless you are using the beta, none of the above is going to be applicable to you, and if you are using the beta, and reporting an issue with how it should be working, you should post your question there.
