Compile does not include all chapters

I even tried to compile that single chapter and printed to pdf and it still didn’t include the text. Any ideas>

Does the Windows compile pane show the “section type” of the chapter? This type needs to be mapped to something for compilation.

If you assign type “by structure” then it should probably just work, as the default formats generally map to the default structure types e.g. parts, scene, chapter.

Is the text of your chapter in a document, or in some field that may not compile, eg, notes? Is the text styled in a special way?

Does any compile format work?

It’s a chapter, so it is mapped, and yet compile does not pull it in

Chapters are usually folders without text. The Section Layout assigned to the Chapter folder Section Type probably doesn’t have the “Text” Content Type checkbox selected, only the “Title” checkbox.

Double-click the Compile Format you’re using in the left column of the Compile Overview window to open the Compile Format Designer. In the Section Layouts Pane, select the Section Layout for Chapter. Check the checkbox for “Text” to the right of the Section Layout name.

Save, Compile, and repeat until satisfied…

Alternatively, you may have a Compile: subset selected above the right hand side column in the Compile Overview window, or a Filter may be active.

try looking at the entire manuscript in the outliner and include the compile column which has a checkbox and see if everything is checked. If not can fix right in the Outliner. You can also include section type to make sure those are correct as well and fix here if needed. Example below.

Just as an experiment, try setting the Section Type of everything to “scene”. What you get will look rubbish, but everything should get printed, at least.
That says that Section Types is the problem. As mentioned above, you have to use the Compile screens to define exactly how you want each section type to appear.

To see all the Chapter section types that are not ticked to compile, open Project Search.
Tick Section Type, under the Search In heading.
Under Options, only have Search ‘Excluded’ Documents ticked.
Search will return the Boolean result of the Chapter section type not marked to compile.
That will tell you if you inadvertently made an error not marking certain chapters to compile.

I think the common theme of all these answers is “what’s different about this chapter from the other chapters which compile OK?” Without seeing your screens, we’re guessing:

  • Wrong section assignment?
  • Unmapped section in compile format?
  • Content in a part of the section not normally output?
  • Not selected for compile/being explicityly filtered out?
