Compile for CreateSpace print-on-demand

It would be lovely to have a set of Compile settings for the CreateSpace print-on-demand format - no page numbers, and the size CreateSpace’s 5.06 inches x 7.81 inches with .125 all round for the bleed, and appropriate margins.

I can’t help thinking that any such custom format preset would just be a starting point for further customisation – exactly as the Paperback Novel custom preset format is now, and offering no particular benefits beyond that existing supplied preset unless you happen to be amongst the subset of people who might want to use that exact configuration.

For a start, there is no single page size for CreateSpace. CreateSpace supports twelve industry-standard trim sizes, not to mention custom sizes (as shown in the “Printing Options” tab on https://www.createspace.com/Products/Book/).

And it wouldn’t be possible to set standard margins that would suit every user of the preset, because the required margin settings obviously depend on the thickness of the book, to allow for binding. A fat book needs a wider inside margin than a thin book (you can find CreateSpace’s specification for this by clicking on the “Learn how to create a PDF to match our Specifications” link under the “Interior” tab on https://www.createspace.com/Products/Book/). So any preset would have to randomly assume that the user had written a book within a particular page number range.

I’m curious to know why you want to omit page numbers. There is loads of advice on the CreateSpace website about how to add page numbers, but I can’t find anything at all that says you shouldn’t have any (apart from on the front matter, of course).

I’m doing a compile for a friend, and he said CreateSpace adds its own page numbers. I don’t want to land him with a book with two page numbers on every page.

I’ve never heard that before. In fact if I search Google for “createspace page numbers”, I get countless hits for tips on how to add page numbers to your PDF so it looks like a proper book.
