Compile places a chapter number before the title and another before the text

My manuscript is structured with a titled folder for each chapter and text inside each folder. When I compile with chapter numbers I get

1 Chapter Title

2
text

Obviously this is a problem. In preview there is no second chapter number before the text. It only happens on compile. I’ve tried the default setting, my own settings, manuscript setting…every setting I could imagine being relevant. I’ve tried compile to PDF and word. I’ve tried every setting I can find, and no matter what I do, if I want chapter numbers, it gives me the same issue. Please help. I’ve worked on this for hours and I am out of ideas.

If your text is a document inside the folder that stands for the chapter, make sure they are not assigned to the same section type.

And if they are not, make sure that in the middle section of the compile panel their section types are not both assigned to the same section layout.

If your chapter is rather a single binder unit (the folder you spoke of, with the text directly in it, in the editor - not a document apart from the said folder), then that means that you have an unwanted <$n> somewhere in your compile format, section layout. (Likely in the section layout’s title suffix.)

Not at computer but first make sure all chapters are the same section type.
Now go to compile format designer and create a chapter section layout. To number only do this-
Do not check title or text.
In formatting section below layout click title tab
In there put Chapter <$n>
That shoul get the result
After assign section layouts the second panel will show a preview of how things will appear.
