Compiling to doc and docx file format error

When trying to compile my manuscript into either the doc, dox, or rtf file formats it will complete the compiling process, but then when I try to open any of the documents it created using Word, it gives me the following error:

“Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, <>|”/)."

I can open all three in TextEdit. Once open in TextEdit if I resave it as a different file, I still cannot open it with word.

I was able to export to PDF without issue.

Here are my application and OS versions:

Word: Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 Version 14.1.0
Scrivener: Scrivener 2.8.1.2
macOS: OS X El Capitan version 10.11.4

Are you sure that you don’t have unsupported or too many characters in your title? That’s what always generates that error for me.

Saving as RTF and opening in Word is one of those basic function that normally just works.
