Composition mode blank screen

I haven’t used Scrivener on my desktop for a while (I mostly use it on my old laptop, where it works fine). However, just trying it now, and composition mode is not working. When it goes full screen, it’s blank. I also can’t seem to change the background colour. I’ve tried it with various projects.

Interestingly, I can type (though no words appear), because when I exit composition mode, the new text has been added. I can also use shortcuts to change between text documents.

I’m running Scrivener 3.4 and it’s up to date. My Mac is a 2021 M1 iMac, running Sonoma 14.6.1.

Any ideas?

Thank you,

Gareth.

My first thought is to take a look at your Appearance settings to make sure those haven’t been set to something wonky by accident. Navigate to Scrivener → Settings → Appearance → Composition Mode from Scrivener’s top menu. Click the “Colors” tab and take a look at your Editor and Text color settings first and foremost. You can reset these by clicking the “Use Default Color” under the color swatch on the right. Does that fix it?

If not, next would be a full preferences reset: Resetting Preferences / macOS: Troubleshooting / Knowledge Base - Literature and Latte Support

Thank you, Jen. The preferences reset worked! Good to know for the future.

Cheers,

Glad to hear that worked for you!

Yeah, you might have had some bad settings from a previous build. We spotted a bug (fixed in the latest version), that was saving the wrong defaults for paper size, which could result in the “paper” being smaller than a pixel—invisible.
