Computer restarting

Hi,
I downloaded the new update of Scrivener 2.04 (I think, I’m afraid to open it right now.) My computer has required me to restart about 5 times in a row today.
Has anyone had troubles with forced restarts after installing the new version of Scrivener?
Thanks,
Laurel

(I’ve split this into a new topic - it’s best to start a new thread for new problems.)

I’ve never heard of anything like this happening, and it is very, very unusual for a Mac to need a complete reboot of the whole computer - there is nothing in Scrivener that should cause anything like this. The worst thing that can happen is that Scrivener itself could crash because of a bug, but that would involve restarting Scrivener, not the entire computer. What messages are you seeing? Are you definitely using the Mac version (I ask simply because it’s more common for Windows to need restarts than Macs…)

All the best,
Keith

Also, could you describe what happens when you are required to reboot? Here are some potential situations and what they would look like:

  1. Does a dialogue box come up on your screen and tell you that you need to restart your computer? This would be something you could defer until later in many cases; computer is still usable. Most likely your Apple Software Updater ran and installed some stuff that needs a reboot.
  2. The screen darkens and you get a white on black text info display in the middle; written in about a half dozen different languages, telling you the computer needs to be reset. This is a hard crash; a kernel panic. Very rare to see one of these any more, but if you have an older computer and/or OS, it’s much more likely to see. Could indicate hardware or operating system problems, but the most common cause of this is actually some of Apple’s pro products. If you have Final Cut Pro installed or anything of that calibre, it can destabilise the system.
  3. Nothing is presented to you. You are forcibly logged out of your account or the computer shuts down spontaneously. If you are using Leopard and Rosetta applications like older versions of Excel, there is a Rosetta bug that will crash your user login; the screen will flicker blue and you’ll get a login panel a few seconds later. A spontaneous power down or reboot is much more rare, and could indicate logic board failure or some other hardware problem.

Whatever the case, Scrivener doesn’t need you to reboot for anything; and it isn’t running in Rosetta space. Most likely you saw situation #1; and just so happened to install some Apple updates and firmware updates on the same day you installed Scrivener. You don’t generally need to reboot more than once, but some firmware updates can require more rebooting.

Hi, Amberv,
Thanks very much for your response. I’m getting the #2 with the dark screen and international languages. It seems to be oddly intermittent. I’m using the laptop right now to write to you, but this morning, it happened at least twice more when I turned it on.

I have a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.11.

I don’t have FinalCut Pro and don’t know any other Pro program I would have. The most recent software I installed was the update 2.0.3 of Scrivener. That was why I wondered if it was related.

I googled kernel panic and it said something about panic logs, so here is mine in case it helps.
The console log is below because it says something about Scrivener.

Keith,
Thanks for your message too. I think I downloaded the Mac version–would the PC version run on a mac if I had done that by mistake? It says version 2.0.3 (7783) in the About Scrivener pop up box.
2.0 was giving me no problems.
Thanks,
Laurel

Hi Laurel,

No, you’re definitely using the Mac version then, I just had to check to rule that out.

Unfortunately, the bad news is that it sounds as though your computer needs to see a doctor. The messages you are seeing are indeed kernel panics and Scrivener isn’t be the cause, I’m afraid. According to the panic logs, the culprit seems to be a kernel extension called “IOADBFamily”, but I’ve got no idea what that is - a quick Google suggests it is part of the OS itself. This could mean that you may need to reinstall your OS, or it may mean that you have a hardware problem. Either way, if this keeps happening you should definitely get someone to look at your machine.

Just to clarify, though: do you see this message only when Scrivener is running, or when it’s not running too? (Scrivener installs nothing that would touch the kernel…)

Sorry it’s not good news!

All the best,
Keith

Keith,
Thanks very much! No, it was happening also when I turned the computer on before I got a chance to open Scrivener.
Sorry to bother you all.
Laurel

No problem. In that case, Scrivener definitely can’t be causing the issues - good luck with getting your computer fixed!
All the best,
Keith
