Constant Crashing - 2.3.1 & 10.8

Hi,

I’ve just updated to 2.3.1 and every-time I create a folder or new text file in Scrivener, it crashes.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Scott

Are you using the Mac App Store version? Have you sent us your crash reports? Sorry you’re having problems, but hopefully we’ll get you sorted.

Not using the app store version, using the direct download. I have sent a few crash reports now. Would you like me to do another and put something additional in the message?

Thanks,

Scott

You are not alone
Similar here. Crashes when I duplicate a text sheet. Reproducible.
I’m on the 2.3.1 download and OS X 10.7.4 on a MacBook Pro.
Have sent in a crash log this morning to Jeff.(hopefully the attachment worked this morning!)

I do have lots of wacky software loaded so it may not be a Scrivener issue…

Thanks

Scott, your crash seems to be coming from Growl. So, please try uninstalling Growl and see if that helps (if so, you might try reinstalling the latest version of Growl from their website).

Graham, your crash is more complicated but seems to be coming from some plugins you have installed on your system. I’ll get back to you via the support email channel.

All the best,
Keith

One other thing: any users of 10.7.4 should go to Software Update… in the Apple menu, as it turns out that there was a serious bug in 10.7.4 that affected certain Macs and which could cause our App Store version to crash.

Keith, I’m on 10.7.4 and Apple Software Update isn’t returning an update notification.
Edit: Do you mean 10.7.3?
H

Hi Hugh,

No, I mean 10.7.4. The update notification will only show up on affected machines, I believe.

Best,
Keith

Hi,

I removed Growl following:

growl.info/documentation/growl-p … otherfiles

Rebooted and can’t find any active growl processes running. Unfortunately Scrivener is still crashing. Have sent a new crash report five mins ago.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

I’ve looked at the latest crash report you sent and it is still crashing in Growl, I’m afraid, so it seems that it hasn’t been uninstalled completely after all. You can confirm this for yourself just by glancing at the first few lines of the crash log gobbledygook - you will see Growl and GrowlApplicationBridge mentioned a lot.

All the best,
Keith

Hi Keith,

I have upgraded to the latest version of Growl from the App store instead as I couldn’t find any trace of it on my system to remove. Unfortunately Scrivener still crashes in the same way for me. No mention of the growl framework in the error log now though.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Scott

You have a bunch of plugins. For a start, I would try cleaning out your /library/contextual menu items folder (or at least moving them to a temporary location to see if that helps). I would do the same for the /library/inputmanagers folder too. Most importantly of all, though, follow these instructions:

scrivener.tenderapp.com/help/kb/ … nderplugin

According to your crash report, you have SCFinderPlugin installed, which hasn’t been updated since before Lion and is known to crash many programs, including Scrivener.

In general, I strongly recommend that users review all the plugins they have installed on their system before updating to a new version of OS X. If you are using outdated plugins, they can crash many programs, and it will be very difficult for the vendors of other programs to find the causes of such crashes. (Personally, I just try to stay away from system plugins.)

Hi,
It was a plugin that caused my problem. ‘SyncpCMPlugin.plugin’ - I’ve deleted that and everything works fine now. (It wasn’t something I was using anyway).
Thanks for working through the logs Keith, and pointing me in the right direction.

For anyone else out there, I recommend you clear all your plugins from your /Library/Contextual Menu Items (both under your user account AND system-wide library) to a separate folder, then try Scrivener again and see if its good. If it is, copy back your plugins one at a time until you find the culprit.

This was suggested to me by Keith, and it worked for me.

Thanks

PS: I’ve no hard evidence for this, but my problems may have started when I upgraded to Safari V 6.0.

Hi Keith,

It was the SCFinderPlugin issue you have already documented in support. I only looked in the Library folder under my user account, hence missed it sitting in my root HD Library folder. Sorry about that. All working now. Thanks for you help.

Thanks,

Scott
