Copying and pasting external references?

I created a bunch of URL document references attached to the wrong part of the project. Is there an easy way to copy and paste them, or to convert them to project references?

You can’t copy and paste them, unfortunately (though that capability will be added in the future). For now though, the best way to do this is to open one of the documents as a Quick Reference panel (just click on it in the Binder and then hit the spacebar), open up the References split in that panel and move it aside. Now go back to the other document and select all of the references in the list (Cmd-A works) and drag and drop them over. Now you can delete the from the incorrect item with Cmd-delete or with the “-” button.

Thanks for that answer. I’ve wondered the same thing. You say that capability will be in a future version? Any idea when? I usually just throw everything into Project References 'cause I do so much mixing and matching of documents and moving blocks of copy around and then deleting the original docs, losing the references in the process. I wonder though what you would anchor the doc reference to? Would there be a separate section in Project References that has every Document reference whether you’ve deleted the Doc or not? Just curious.

Probably some time this year, I can’t say for sure yet.

I am not sure what you are referring to, all I meant to say above is that it would be possible to select five references from one document, copy them, navigate to another document, and paste them into its pane.

Oh, I see what you’re saying. I was talking about how I might be working on a small Doc with a few references and realize at some point that I want to take those paragraphs, throw them onto another doc, and delete the first one. Not good Scrivener Operating Procedure, I understand. I thought maybe you’d do it like Keywords. I.e., once you add one, it’s attached to the Project, even if the doc it started in is no longer there. That make sense? David

The difference between Project References and Document References is better compared with how Project Notes and Document Notes work. In both cases, the former can be recalled in the Inspector no matter what you have selected in the editor.

As to your described working habit, I don’t see anything wrong with that—but you might have better luck using the Merge feature, which does merge meta-data like assigned document references.
