Crash, then document becomes incompatible[NOTED]

This was reported in the tech support forum also, but I wanted to make sure it got listed here just in case. My computer crashed while I was working in Scrivener and when I restarted my computer and tried to get back in, it popped back up with a dialog box that stated my project was incompatible with the version of Scrivener I was using. I downloaded version 1.3, but I still got the same message. I currently have an entire story that I’m locked out of. It really makes me sad.

Are you able to at least recover the RTF files? I know you may not be able to recover other meta-data but you should be able to access your main text

Just replied to your post in the thread on the tech forum about getting your writing out. You can also snatch out the synopses and document notes easily enough by taking the appropriate files in the Docs folder, identified by number_synopsis.txt and number_notes.rtf; the number will match up with the .rtf file containing the chunk of your story that it belongs to. (So if you created a document in the binder called Scene4 in Scrivener and wrote your fourth scene in it along with a synopsis and some notes to yourself, that will all be in the Docs folder as, for example, 4.rtf, 4_synopsis.txt, and 4_notes.rtf. Note that the numbers won’t necessarily represent the order of your story; they’re created in ascending order whenever you create a new document, folder, or document group in the Binder and the numbers never change, so if you inserted a scene in the middle somewhere or rearranged things, that doesn’t change the actual file names. So when you open all these and view them in Word, you may have to rearrange a little to get them into the proper order.)

Project notes are stored in the Files\Project Notes folder as .rtf files.

Your other metadata (labels, statuses, etc.) is technically available also, but it’s a little harder to peel out since it’s all stored in .xml files. You could certainly open them in a text editor and skim through to find everything, but unless you’re comfortable doing that or the information is absolutely vital, it’s probably not worth the hassle.

I was able to recover my documents by opening them through Word. I seem to be missing about 2000 words from random portions throughout the document, but hey, I’ll take what I can get. Still a bug that might want to be investigated, as I can’t open the document through Scrivener anymore. I might try uninstalling and then reinstalling at a later date, but I don’t know yet.

I just posted a bit in the Tech forum thread what might be a fix for you… https://forum.literatureandlatte.com/t/project-incompatable-cant-fix-it/9841/1

It worked for the broken project the other user there had, so you could give it a shot. Still obviously a bug somewhere, but until it’s fixed this might help.
