Cross-platform licence or...?

Hi guys, I just emailed this question in but I guess other folk may be interested in knowing…

I pretty much only use my old Mac for Scrivener, due to other work my main computers are now Windows based.

I was considering upgrading to version 2 for OSX when that became available but, obviously, having a Windows version would, currently, be more useful as my only Mac is an old G4 stuck in a spare room at home. So, would I be able to upgrade to version 2 but then cross to the Windows version when that comes out?

I know of other software that allows this (usual rules apply, only one version can be used at any one time etc) so wondered if this would be an option with Scrivener?

Sorry, I’ve only just watched the video and noticed the FAQ at the bottom of the website;

A: Yes. Scrivener for Windows uses the same file format as Scrivener 2.0 for the Mac (which will be out in October). There are certain differences between the two versions, so some settings (such as the compile settings) will be platform-specific and so will need setting up slightly differently, but it will all get stored in the one project that can be moved between Windows and Mac machines.

Q: Will I have to buy separate licences for the Mac and Windows versions?
A: I’m afraid so, yes. The Windows and Mac versions are completely different development efforts with different developers working on them. Given the low price of Scrivener, we can’t afford to bundle both licences without putting the price up. (Even software that costs much more, such as Photoshop and Microsoft Office, requires different licences for different platforms.) [/i]

So, looks like I’ll be holding off on upgrading until the Windows version comes out… can’t wait!! :smiley:

Separate licences presumably means that no discount can be offered on the piece for current Mac users of Scrivener? Still, I’m overjoyed about its release and compatibility!! For reasons of price and screen choice I work on a Mac Mini though it would be great to have the option to work on my wife’s laptop when we are away. Though Simplenote and External Folder Syn in 2.0 would appear to offer further options. What a choice!

Everyone at PageFour and Liquid Story Binder must be sporting long faces at the news.

Thanks Mike, much appreciated. You’re right that there are currently no plans for a cross-grade option, although we haven’t finished ironing everything out yet. There are still four months or so until it actually goes on sale, so we still have much to discuss! But because the two versions are separate development efforts and both L&L and Lee have invested much time and money in what will be a $40 product, we’re not sure we can afford too many discounts (beyond our initial NaNoWriMo one) for a little while.

Cheap bastard. Of course you have to buy another license. All the work that they’re putting into polishing and compiling a build for an entirely new OS has to be paid for someho…
