Cross platform shared project issue [resolved]

Hi.
I am currently trying to send a project I commented on in the Windows version to a Mac user.
I zipped my version of the project. Backup, zipped and timestamped.
Now that user only see’s one document.

Does the project folder not need to be unzipped under Mac ?

What should I do different ?

Hi Vincent_Vincent.

On the PC, the user will see a .scriv folder and can double-click the folder to examine its contents. On the Mac, the user only see the .scriv file.

We have screenshots of what each platform shows on this cross-platform Knowledge Base article.

Hi Ruth. Thanks for assisting.

Could the user have opened the project without unzipping the project folder I sent ?

On the Mac, double-clicking on a ZIP file prompts the Mac to unzip the file for the user. From there, they should be able to double-click on the .scriv file to open the project.

Ok.
So, if the user got so far as opening the project in Scrivener seeing only one document, that means that he unzipped it first.
Right?

So, what about the fact that he sees only that one document ?

Yes, if he was able to open the project in Scrivener, then his Mac unzipped the file.

The ZIP should have protected the contents of the project, so all of its files should have been included correctly.

Is there any chance that the project has a saved search that is causing him to only see one document?

I ask because when I get projects from users for troubleshooting, often the last document/search they viewed is what I’ll see when I first open the project.

If that isn’t a factor, I can test a project from your PC to my Mac if you want to DM a sample to me.

Not at my end. I last saved/backed-up the project in the exact state I wished the user to find it upon project open.

I am not at liberty to decide. …Waiting on user’s authorization. (But thanks no matter which way it goes.)

If the other user would prefer, they can also open a help ticket with us.

They can reference that you started a discussion here, which will give whomever picks up the ticket some context for what’s occurring.

As a quick check, you might unzip the file and make sure that the exact thing you sent opens correctly on your own computer.

Off the top of my head, I can’t see how the backup could have been messed up on your end, but that’s still more likely than a properly formed ZIP file being damaged in transit.

You might also check for Dropbox weirdness. Is the other user storing the project locally, or with a cloud service of some kind?

Done that a while back already. Re-downloaded the version sent as an email attachment : all good.

Ha… perhaps perhaps.

Some interface settings will not copy between platforms, so it’s possible that the appearance of the window is different from what you see when the Mac user opens it, even though the contents are the same. Without really having a clear idea of what the other user is seeing when you say “a single document”, it’s hard to predict what’s going on, but one thing to try is for your collaborator to click into the editor (which I’m assuming shows that single document) and select Navigate ▸ Reveal in Binder. That will handle opening the binder if it’s hidden or switching to it if it’s showing a collection and also expanding any collapsed items as necessary to show the current document, which might lead to discovery of the problem.

I so far assumed he meant in the binder.
(And the document he sees is not the one I’ve set the project to open on.)

Will do.

Might be helpful to get them to send you a screenshot, which you can post here.

Thanks everyone. :+1:
I believe the issue should now be resolved.
@RuthS successfully opened the project. But for whatever reason it would appear that the project version last saved under Windows didn’t display the binder under Mac.
Rather a split editor, both showing the same document. → As it turns out, the very same document that my collaborator reported seeing.
(Note that, as I’ve specified earlier, the document displayed upon loading the project is not the one that I had as selected in the binder when I last saved the project.)

There are still some lingering display settings that are not transferring properly between platforms. The first time you open a project on a Mac it will have nothing select at all in fact, resulting in an editor screen you rarely see (since it is ordinarily impossible to “close” the editor fully).
