I’m trying to cross reference different chapters in my introduction. (For example, this will be shown Chapter X etc). How can I do this? I’d like to be able to highlight something in the chapter to be referred to, and have the system autonumber. I searched and have not been able to find anthing like this though. Maybe I’m just using the wrong search terms?
I need to deliver my manuscript chapters as individual word files, but would like the cross references between chapters to be clean.
Scrivener’s method of cross-reference labelling will be ideal for a scenario where you have to split up the work into many files. It prints them as static text rather than dynamic links to sections, which would be broken by removing those sections from the reference’s context.
Have a look at the “Auto-Numbering” section of the File ▸ List of All Placeholders… reference. The basics are at the top, but you will in particular be interested in the placeholders and examples given toward the bottom of that section.
