data lost after catalina 10.15.7 update!

I updated my computer today, as I often do yet I forgot to shut down scrivener first. I didn’t even think much about it because it autosaves and worse case scenario I figured I’d only lose things since the last save. When my computer relaunched, I found that everything within my school semester document since early october had been lost. The file still exists but it says in my writing history that I haven’t written since october 5th, even though I’ve been writing there everyday and I know I’ve saved since then. I’m absolutely devastated especially since I’m in the middle of exams and all my notes are now gone, including homeworks. I’ve look in trash, icloud, tried time machine, backups, nothing seems to work. I’m very desperate to get the lost data back.

The most likely explanation is that Scrivener is opening an older version of the project. You can locate all Scrivener projects on your system by searching for .scriv files in Finder. You can locate Scrivener’s automatic backups by going to the Scrivener → Preferences → Backups pane, and opening the backup folder in Finder.

Time Machine should be the ultimate fallback if those two avenues fail. But you really do have to use the Time Machine interface. Searching the Time Machine disk yourself is unlikely to work.

I finally found it. It was very strange because it backed up under a totally different title, but the info is all still there. Thanks for the help!
