Dialog focus problem

My story involves telepathy and the telepathic thoughts are in italics. Dialog focus only picks up the italic text and ignores normal dialog in quotes?

I don’t know if can get it to include normal dialog in quotes. The italic text is not in quotes.

A reply to myself. The issue was I was using smart quotes for my novel. Evidently dialog focus can only read dumb/straight quotes. This is not in the blurb in the Scrivener manual. I would ask L&L to consider adding and maybe even letting it detect smart quotes if possible. I converted my document to straight quotes and it is now working.

Hello @GoalieDad

Perhaps specify which quotes type you are set for, as for at my end french guillemets («») – smart quotes turned on in the options – don’t cause the problem you’ve encountered.

“Unquote” type smart quotes and can not see text when convert to straight quotes then can see text with dialog focus.

That was never my experience on Windows. I always use smart quotes, and DF had no problem distinguishing them from the rest of the text. It even recognised conversation of more than one paragraph where there is no closing inverted comma (but each paragraph had an opening inverted comma) until the end of one side of a conversation, which I thought was a pretty intelligent consideration.

For some reason my program will not read smart quotes. Don’t know why. Converted and will deal with it.

It might have to do with your font.

interesting thought. Using Georgia regular, nothing exotic.

I use Aptos, which I had to download and install. M365 includes Aptos by default these days, but it wasn’t available to Scrivener. Perhaps installing a font makes a difference over the system fonts available to Scrivener.

Thanks for the thought, I will probably be lazy, I switched and dialog focus is working. I have to make sure dialog is dialog and telepathic “thoughts/conversations” are in italics. I will just convert back when done, which may be the lesser evil, but keep in mind for the future.
