I can no longer get the narrower menu bar (not split across the notch) and now have an enlarged Scrivener interface on my M4 after the upgrade. Sure I can switch to a general narrow interface for all apps, but that sucks.
Downgrading an update on Mac seems somewhat of a schlep compared to Windows as well.

I’ve upgraded to 26.6.1 this morning and I’m not seeing what I think it is that you are saying. Can you provide a screen shot. (I’m not sure what you mean by general narrow interface, so a screen shot or two would assist).

Can’t speak to the problem itself, I am blessed to have a monitor without parts of the screen cut out of it.

What do you mean by the interface being enlarged though, just in one program?

Hence what lead to my personal policy of never running Apple updates for my real system until about a half a year later (which over time came to be around one year later, as they grew more haphazard with QA).

For your info I’ve been running Tahoe for a few months with no noticeable issues with Scrivener or any other app that I habitually use. I take each macOS point release as they arrive. I’m not saying your policy is not well-founded, but just passing on some, perhaps anecdotal, experience.

On the other hand, 26 is probably one I’ll be skipping over entirely, and just jump straight to the “fixed” version of it next year, while I hold back on 15 for the main system for now. It’s too visually unappealing for me to really consider using it for any more time than it takes to reboot for a quick 26-only bug check.

Depending on your available time, rebooting to recovery mode and restoring the disk from yesterday’s Time Machine is I believe the easiest way to do this. I do wonder why they haven’t added a simple system snapshot utility, sometimes—they have all of the ingredients necessary—but it probably just goes back to the big philosophical divide: they have famously put that once they release something it’s already obsolete. Yesterday’s version isn’t even worth thinking about.

I’m out so won’t be able to post pictures for a few hours.
The Scrivener interface is large (too large for my liking) by default on my 13” M4. So did a few tweaks in the Mac Settings Accessibility and Display menus, and one other. Can’t remember the exact menu choices offhand. Things were working well, till they went south. I did Quit Scrivener before running the upgrade.
I’ll give a Time Machine downgrade a go. I have the facility in place.

Zero issues with 26.6.1 with Scrivener on my M2 Max

Inertia.

Seriously, engineering inertia. One of the things that Apple understood about the people that bought their machines marketed to the “think different” creative types was that some users would master a single version and not change until they had to.

Tim Cook’s era at the helm has muddied these waters quite a bit, but the back-of-the-house dev teams hold that there are many users that think like @AmberV does just as there are many users that will gleefully join the public beta just as soon as they learn about it.

It may well be one of those situations that Heinlein spoke of when he said that “It’s amazing how much ‘mature wisdom’ resembles being too tired.”
