I recently bought this software and was really disappointed to discover that there was no project target features for Windows. This is really difficult to get new projects off the ground without targets.
The latest version update (Scrivener V3) is not even released for Windows, with no date set in concrete. It seems as though the software developers are highly biased towards macOS, and Windows is just an after thought.
And when the latest update gets released, we’ll have to pay $25 for the update.
I’m really disappointing by this, I need to warn future Windows users not to buy this software, as it is essentially still in beta.
You should read the manual and do the interactive tutorial, both of which show you how to set targets, both for the entire project, and for individual documents.
As for the “afterthought” comment, yeah, the Windows version was an afterthought, because it wasn’t even started until five years after the Mac version had been released. But they’re bringing it up to parity and the new version is supposed to be released next year. There’s even a beta of it that you can download from this very forum. It ALSO has project targets, by the way.
I’m sorry that you’ve had such a difficult time using a great piece of software that has historically been priced incredibly low. I’m sorry that you think that a development team of TWO PEOPLE should be able to easily make up the difference in time and manpower to deliver a product to the same standards as one that has had a half-decade head start. I’m sorry that you didn’t take advantage of the thirty-day full-feature trial period so that you could figure out whether or not the software was right for you before spending money on the activated version. And I’m sorry that you think that other people should be warned that you didn’t put in your own due diligence.

Well said Sanguinius. I don’t understand why Scrivener attracts a small but vocal number of people who criticise a program they clearly don’t know and complain about a price that is far below anything remotely comparable.
FYI, I did the entire laborious tutorial, and there is no way that you can set date/time deadlines with wordcounts, as you can in the macOS. The Windows project deadline feature could have been made by a child, my heart does not bleed for for the two Windows Developers. I’d just like a bit more options, like I’ve seen in countless macOS tutorials.
If the Windows product has less feature, it should cost less. If you want it the same, then hire more developers, god knows there are plenty out there and this is not a very sophisticated program to develop.

You’re new here, and this information wouldn’t be easy to come by without some fairly in-depth research, so I’ll help you out in the interest of gently removing the shovel from your white-knuckled grasp. The way the Windows version works in this regard is how the original Mac version worked for years. Hence, you’re basically saying the developer of the Mac version is a child as well. I don’t think that’s what you meant to say. There is also the problem in that this simple progress bar is quite a bit more complicated than you realise. Again, not the sort of thing one could figure out very easily however, so we could excuse this as a simple misunderstanding on your part.
Wrong, and wrong. As noted at the very top of the software description page:
“Scrivener 3 is now available for macOS and will be a free update for all new Windows customers.”
Here is the longer post. So, even at the least charitable way of putting it, you’re getting the upgrade for $5.
While it is understandable that you’d make a few mistakes with regards to historic versions of Scrivener and just how much code it takes to do certain things—there is a bit of pattern forming here, with these very basic and easy to debunk factual problems in your posts, a pattern that is less easy to excuse. And that is probably why you find your thread not becoming, as you put, valuable.
I am commenting here to let the Windows users know (just in case they end up here like me) that the “Project Targets” section in Windows version has missing features as compared to the MacOs verision, namely “show overrun”, “target deadline” and “show target notifications”. Basically the entire “option” section (present at the bottom right) is missing.
I must say it is very sad as these features are unique to Scrivener I guess (in case anyone knows any other Writing Software with the deadline and target features, please respond. it will be helpful).
I am using Scrivener on Trial basis as of now and I just loved the tutorials and it’s exciting features but ended up getting disappointed knowing many amazing features especially this one is missing in the Windows version.
