Does anybody use character count?

To know the word count is very useful. But what about char count. Does anybody use that and for what?

All the time. I have a side job as the Catholicism Guide for About.com, and the tools we use for formatting articles are based on character count.

Character count is the norm in Sweden, at least in the magazine and newspaper world.

Character count is the norm here in Italy, too. Magazines ask me for a certain char lenght, not a certain number of words.

Character count is the norm in Germany.
