Drag and drop document link from header bar

It would be very useful to be able to drag and drop a document from the header bar (or somewhere else in the editor) in order to create a scrivener link.

Currently, dropping a link is possible by holding alt while dragging the doc icon from the binder. Another excellent program I use – ConnectedText – allows you to drag an icon at the header of the document itself in order to drop a link elsewhere. Being able to do this in Scrivener too would be great.

You might, for example, be creating an outline on the basis of rough notes previously generated, and linking those rough notes to the documents that comprise the outline. Eg, via scrivener links placed in the Document Notes field. Currently, if you want to drop a link from a doc displayed in the right editor into the inspector’s Notes field of the doc in the left editor, you first have to locate it in the binder. Even with the ‘reveal in binder’ command, this can be a bit of a faff, especially since the selected doc in the binder is quite hard to see when the binder doesn’t have focus.

In a future version, the icon in the header bar will be draggable, and will work just the same as dragging an icon from the binder.

All the best,
Keith

This was an old request of mine as well, but there may be a technical obstacle. Discussion here:

Token for document(s) being edited, in editor’s title bar

As a workaround, there’s a Scrivener Link capability on Copy Special. Unfortunately, it’s locked out in the editor; the user must click to Corkboard or Outliner to enable. Just an extra step, but still hoping for a fix.

Remove the lockout on “Copy Special” for self-link

Oops, neglected to check for new replies. Thanks, Keith.

Yes, following that discussion I redesigned the way the icon works for a future version. The technical limitation in Windows 1.x/Mac 2.x is that the icon is a pop-up/pull-down menu, and clicking on it triggers the menu before a drag can be initiated. So for the next major iteration, I’ve changed it so that the header bar menu is no longer triggered by clicking on the icon, but is instead contextual (right-click, or Ctrl-click on the Mac). This frees up the icon to be a custom draggable control, and it also means you can right-click anywhere on the header bar to bring up the menu, which is more intuitive anyway, I think.

Jerome—thanks for your tip with the workaround, its brill. Haven’t noticed that option before. That method is much better than flailing around in the binder trying to locate things, despite having to shift over to a different view mode.

Definitely another vote from me in favour of being able to access the copy-as-link option from anywhere. And it would be nice if it was possible to assign the function to a keyboard shortcut also.

Keith—cheers for the info, looking forward all the more to the future!

Very glad to hear. Keith and David both. Some days it’s especially satisfying to participate in these forums.
