dynamic number for section and subsections in chapter

ok I am sure this is found somewhere … but after 30 min of looking I am just going to ask …

In Word etc. when you use number for sections and sub-sections… these numbers automatically change if you move the subsection either within a section or to a new section … It seems that there is only two choices here: do it manually (not always ideal because if you move, eg. sub-sectino 2 of 13 from a section … you have to renumber all the other subsections) or wait till you compline the document (but then you cannot see in as you are working where you are in the section) …

is there a way to do this that I am missing … or is it simple not possible …

thanks in advance

Steve

In the binder, you don’t get dynamic numbering. But I know it’s possible in the outline view; I think it’s just one of the options when you are selecting columns to display. Scrivener’s design doesn’t lend itself to live numbering in general, so it’s best to rely on titles (even if you don’t plan for those titles to end up in the compiled output) to communicate something about the contents of documents.

Note that the outline numbering doesn’t end up in your compile document; you have to set up compile to produce those numbers too.
