When I highlight a block of text my delete key doesn’t work to delete it, nor can I move the block with the usual Mac touchpad gestures. Am I doing something wrong?
When I use Command-X to cut a piece of text, it can take 20 seconds before the text disappears from the original location. Again, is there something I can do about this?
Hi MrF,
As you’re on Windows, may I suggest you post in the Windows section of the forum? Not that I’m platformist or anything ( ), but you may get a quicker reply.

I’m pretty sure he’s in the right forum, but has the wrong platform selected in his user profile.
MrF: You might want to click on the User Control Panel link above and change to Mac (or Mac & Windows) as your primary platform, just to avoid confusing people.
As for your issues, I wish I could point to something helpful, but it sounds like you’re having some very bizarre issues. Are you using a wireless keyboard? Maybe the batteries are low, or you’re getting interference. Try plugging in a wired keyboard and seeing how that works.
There may be some software you are running, maybe for creating macros that expand text from abbreviations into something big and grand, or some other utility that’s making Scriv behave badly? Hold down the shift key when you log in (or reboot if it logs you in automatically) to keep any programs from running that are set to do so at log-in time. Then try to do the same things in Scrivener; if it behaves better, then one of your login items is to blame.
Is this consistent or intermittent? If the latter, does it happen with a predictable regularly, such as after a pause of not having worked for a while, or does it happen while you are in the midst of typing and working without pause? After you switch from one application to another? Is your computer making any audible noises when this happens? For instance if you are working off of an external hard drive, is there a bunch of noise from the drive when this happens?
D’oh! (That’ll teach me to read and write posts whilst watching TV - in this case a fascinating BBC programme on Ian Rankin - of Rebus fame - and his writing methods - he is, incidentally, less a plotter, more a pantser…)
Let me try this again and get it right. I’m a Mac user (used to be Windows). I’ve solved some of my problems (haven’t we all), but still can’t seem to manipulate blocks of text properly using the touchpad (for instance, moving text). Clues?
What technique are you using to move text with the touchpad? I’m not aware of any gestures that will do so. If you mean dragging and dropping, can you drag and drop other stuff, like icons in the binder? It’s the same exact technique for both.
I have my touchpad set up to drag and drop with a three finger gesture, which works fine with files in the binder, but won’t pick up text in the editor. I can only cut and paste to move pieces of text.
Okay, that should be working. I just tested it on Snow Leopard. I can three-finger drag to select a range of text, and then tap with three fingers, hold for a second until the cursor changes to an arrow, and then drag and drop the text to a new spot.
Two questions:
Can you drag text this way in the TextEdit program that comes with your Mac?
Does click and drag, rather than the gesture, work fine?
