Not sure what you have tried, but to set editor settings go to Options / Editor and using the graphical interface drag the little adjusters to where you want them. Be aware that as stated above the setting panel, this affects new projects only.
If you want to change an older or existing project use the menu Documents / Convert / Formatting to default text style.
For just the margins you can use Options / Editor and over on the right see the Editor Margins adjuster. Increase or decrease this number to set your margin width…
