Actually my point wasn’t anything involving the complexity–and ProTools isn’t all that complicated under the hood. (But maybe that’s because I do those sorts of things on a daily basis with csound and the like, and I can do an FFT easier than balancing my checkbook.) It’s more that software that appeals to a very, very small subset of users is going to be more expensive because companies sell fewer boxes. Since they sell fewer boxes, the price goes up. It’s getting better, but for software that was developed in the 90’s, a lot of companies haven’t caught up with the changing market.
Or so it seems. You’d think the older the software, the cheaper it would be. It seems like programs that have their roots in DOS or Windows 3.1 (for Finale), still are holding onto older models.
