In “Project Targets,” I find that my Session Target is counting everything I write, even if it’s in the Research folder. Yet everything I can find suggests it should only include words written in the Draft directory.
I’ve tried clicking “Documents included in compile only” in the Project Targets window, and then manually (!) deselecting "“Include in Compile” in General Meta-Data from every other file I’ve created. But still, whenever I try to add to my notes or character files in Research during a session - as I frequently have to do, when I add or alter a character, for instance - that gets counted in my Session Target.
Which really breaks the functionality of the feature for me, unless resort to doing all my note-taking and character descriptions in Word and constantly switching between the programs. Which is pretty much the opposite of why I have Scrivener in the first place.
If someone can help me please - by telling me what I’m doing wrong or whatever - I’d appreciate it. Thanks!
Currently the session target counts document text written anywhere in the project. The Draft target is the one that only counts text in the Draft, and can be further limited to only count text of Draft documents marked “include in compile”. We’ll be adding further refinements to the Project Targets to limit which documents it counts, but for now there aren’t options for this. If you’re trying to track just text in the Draft, you could jot down the Draft word count at the beginning of your session and then subtract that from your final at the end, or use the word count in the editor footer to track text added to your Draft (e.g. for NaNoWriMo, some people just start a new document each day with a 1667 word goal so they can hit the document target and know they’ve hit their day’s goal).
Any update on this? I’m copying content from my chapters into my character pages and it’s inflating my session count. Only realized this today. I want to be able to limit my session count to only documents I choose (or the Drafts folder would be fine too).
Any news ?
I also have the same issue: it is verry annoying to see the session target going up when I copy a huge amount of text in the Research files… Then I lose track of the words really written during this session.
Any News? I don’t really like it, that the main target counter can exclude my notes and the session target is unable to exclude those stuff. Why? This is not useful. Please add that option! I would be so happy!
Following. I have the same issue, and it is crazy annoying. I’ve manually unchecked “include in compile” for everything not my actual manuscript, yet I watch the session target count go up when I add notes to my character profiles and such. I track my starting manuscript target at beginning and end of session to get the real word count, but it’s an extra step to remember, and I don’t always. Frustrating! Generally Scriv is great, but this one little thing is like a splinter in my finger that adds annoyance to every writing session. Seems like it should totally be fixable!
