Export entire document

I’ve been writing a book with Scrivener, and I have each chapter set up as a folder.

Now I’m trying to export the book, but I can only seem to get one folder at a time. How do I get the entire book at once?

What you need to do is choose “Compile” rather than export. Then you’ll be able to choose all or any part of the project that you want, how it will be formatted, and so on.

I tried that also, but I can still only get one folder.

Do you have all of your book inside (indented below) the Draft folder (it might be called something else if you started with a template—it’s an object capable of having whatever name you want, but it is always the top-level icon that looks like a stack of paper with a title sheet facing toward you). The Compiler works by combining the pieces found in the Draft folder—this way you can use the rest of the binder for whatever you please and not worry about it accidentally creeping into the final work.

I didn’t start with a template, I just started writing.

If I create a Draft folder and move everything into it, will that make Scrivener happy?

BTW - thanks for the help!

Okay great, it should just be called “Draft” then. You already have one, it’s impossible to have a project without it and there is no way to make one. It’s a special piece of the binder list like “Trash”, in regards to being something you can’t remove or move out of the top level. Like I say, you should see an icon that looks like a stack of paper. There is another that looks like an open book, Research, and of course the trash can where deleted items go. If you’re having a difficult time seeing the indentation level, just click on this “Draft” folder in the binder, switch your view to Corkboard, and then drag the chapter folders into that corkboard in the order they should appear (you might want to lock the editor with View/Editor/Lock in Place so that you don’t accidentally lose the corkboard while browsing in the binder; Lock in Place keeps the editor stuck on whatever it is currently showing).

The key test is when you compile, click on the little blue Up Arrow button to expand the options, and select Contents in the list. This shows you everything slated to be compiled. If everything is set up right, all of your chapters and scene files should be in this list.

That did it, thanks. I couldn’t figure out how to get the demo to work when I started, so I just started a new document and renamed the Draft folder. Shoving everything into that folder let me do what I wanted
